HISTORY of SAM HILL WAREHOUSE
Built in 1903 and listed in the National Register of Historic Places in 1984, the Samuel Hill Hardware Co. Warehouse’s authenticity, brickwork, and massive timber construction serve as a reminder of the craftmanship of the tradesmen in turn-of-the-century Prescott. The building originally housed the needs of the hardware company established by Samuel Hill, a native of Yorkshire, England. With the top floor built at the height of a railroad box car door, workers could move heavy farming and mining machinery in and out of the warehouse. Sam Hill’s company ultimately became the largest supplier of hardware, mining, ranching, and household goods in the region and was the first store to supply Aeromotor Windmills, Baun and Peter Schulter wagons, Winchester arms, Colt revolvers, and Oldsmobile and Ford automobiles.
The Sam Hill Hardware Co. continued to operate until 1980, making it one of the oldest continuous family businesses in Prescott’s history with its motto “Everybody Swears by Sam Hill” and folklore still surrounding the origins of the phrase: “Where in the Sam Hill.” The Warehouse has been restored multiple times including in 2006 by Prescott College when it served the College’s studio arts department and in 2021 by Whiting Brothers Investment Co. as part of the restoration of the adjacent historic trestle bridge and construction of the Hilton Garden Inn.
