Property Description

The hotel is built above the Roman ramparts, which at the time were 6 kilometres long, 4 gateways and 50 defence towers. One of these towers is located in our hanging gardens, to the left of the large terrace. But many phases of history took place before this site became a hotel! In the Middle Ages the upper part of the town, the Ch├óteau, was used as a fortress by the representative of the Duke of Burgundy. This fortress was dominated by a Tower, built in the 12th century. This tower, which remains today, was surmounted in the 19th century by a statue of the Virgin, erected by the sculptor Autunois Quarr├®. This statue can be seen from the 2nd floor of the north wing of our hotel and the perspective gives the impression that the Virgin is standing on the roof opposite. It was in the 17th century that this tower took the name of the sisters who owned it: the Ursulines. In 1617, two religious cousins, Jeanne and Lucienne de Vesvre, settled at the Ursulines. They welcomed the daughters of the wealthiest families of Autun and made them nuns by teaching them piety, good manners and the service of God. From 1618 to 1639, the number of novices rose to 69. The nuns acquired several plots of land surrounding the cloister. In 1647, they obtained a piece of land called Rivault, which was once part of the castle. From there they became owners of the Tower which took their name, Tour des Ursulines, and the land on which the Hotel Les Ursulines is now located. In 1791, because of the climate generated by the French Revolution, they had to leave their convent. The land was sold in seven lots. In 1836, Mgr d'H├®ricourt, Bishop of Autun, bought the Clos des Ursulines to establish the Visitandines, a religious order which had also settled in Autun in 1624. It was therefore the Visitandines who built, from 1838 onwards, the buildings currently occupied by the hotel. The chapel overlooking the rue de Rivault was blessed in 1841. The Visitandine sisters lived here until 1964, when they left for Macon. A public works company bought the entire property, including the Tour des Ursulines, with the plan to turn it into a hotel. After eight years, the project having failed, the property was sold by parcels. The current plot, where the hotel is located, was bought back to finalise the hotel project and the activity started in 1979.
